SUMMARY:Assessing Levels of Readiness: Identifying Hazards and Risks
DESCRIPTION:Senate Bill 68 requires schools to have annual security assessments.  Security assessments typically identify areas of risks, observable hazards, and the level of readiness of staff to respond to security and safety issues.\nComprehensive assessments may have a hefty price tag when contracted services are utilized.  While an initial assessment by a reputable organization is beneficial, ongoing assessments can and should be conducted by school staff assigned to specific workspaces.   However, to do so, requires training and an understanding of the following:\n\nComponents of an assessment and how it is conducted\nWhat constitutes a risk or a hazard\nWhen is a risk acceptable\nStrategies for mitigating or eliminating risks\nMeasurement of readiness\nUse of short/long-term planning to address findings\n\nMissouri State University in collaboration with Edu-Safe USA has developed a workshop to assist schools in complying with Senate Bill 68 without the annual expense of using outside assessors.  With this workshop attendees will receive:\n\nSample templates for conducting an assessment\nQuestionnaires for determining the level of readiness\nInstructions for analyzing risk and hazards through real life examples\nStrategies for making all staff participatory in school safety and the implementation of assessments.\n\nAbout the Instructor:\nDennis Lewis is the President of Edu-Safe LLC, a school safety training and consulting organization founded in 1999. His primary focus is developing “Best Practice” strategies for enhancing student and staff safety. Dennis provides cutting edge training, safety and readiness assessments, and consults with attorneys as an expert defense witness on school safety litigation. He is a published author on a number of safety and security topics and is the Past President of the National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officers. From 1990 to 2006 Dennis was the Director of Public Safety for the largest school district in Missouri, overseeing 54 educational sites and 26,000 students.\n
