Workplace Violence: Awareness, Prevention, and Response

Cases of workplace violence in the U.S. are both common and catastrophic. The growing number of national attacks at our businesses, schools, hospitals, churches, and public spaces should heighten the need for all employees to understand the pre-attack warning signs, especially when they hear verbal, written, or cyber threats.

Every employee must be able to follow the national DHS protocol: Run – Hide – Fight, especially in the stress of those moments. All employees need to know what to do, what not to do, what to tell if they have concerns, and how to protect themselves and others during these life-threatening and life-changing events.

Steve uses empowerment over fear to make the participants in this training feel comfortable about this uncomfortable subject (e.g., no bloody videos or frightening stories). In this fast-paced and tool-based session he covers these issues.

Learning Objectives:

  • Defining potential workplace events and possible perpetrators.
  • A brief history of Active Shooter events nationally and lessons learned.
  • OSHA employee protection, documentation, and response requirements.
  • Recognizing pre-attack behavioral warning signs; understanding threat “leakage”; and the difference between Hunters and Howlers.
  • The value of Threat Assessment Teams.
  • The need to reduce the possibility of revenge-driven attacks, using empathy, patience, support, and listening skills between bosses, employees, customers, clients, students, vendors, or anyone the organization serves.
  • Viewing of a reasonable and empowering Run-Hide-Fight video.
  • Understanding the police response.
  • How to practice and drill with “Run-Hide” safely and effectively.
