From Burnout to Building Something Better

Ryan Coe’s Early-Stage Business Boot Camp Story.

Starting a business rarely begins with a perfectly polished plan. More often, it starts with a moment that makes you realize it’s time for something different.

For Ryan Coe, Managing Partner of Rhino I.T., that moment came toward the end of his previous job.

“I became very aware of — and very tired of — being underpaid and disrespected while doing all the work,” Ryan said. “Meanwhile the executives got the lion’s share of the spoils while knowing nothing about what they sell or even how it works.”

That realization planted a seed. Ryan began researching what it would take to start his own business. During that search, he came across the Early-Stage Business Boot Camp offered by efactory’s Missouri SBDC at Missouri State University.

The program was still a few weeks away, but the idea stuck with him.

Shortly after he was let go from his job, Ryan made his move.

“I immediately signed up.”

A Career Built on Keeping Things Connected

Ryan didn’t set out to become an entrepreneur, but his path in technology made the transition a natural one.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, he grew up in a family rooted in blue-collar trades.

“My family transported goods physically: by train, truck or automobile,” Ryan said. “I do it electronically.”

That interest started early. Ryan’s fascination with technology began as a teenager when he got into computers to share something in common with his dad — a curiosity that eventually turned into a career in networking and telecommunications.

“If it plugged into the wall, I was most likely involved at some point.”

After years of hands-on experience and leading IT operations, Ryan reached a point where he was ready to build something of his own — leading to the launch of Rhino I.T. in late 2025.

Taking the Leap

Rhino I.T. is now shifting from idea to execution, with a focus on finding clients and building momentum.

“We recently left the setup stage and are now actively seeking clients,” he said. “It’s still a giant risk and praying it pays off.”

Through the Early-Stage Business Boot Camp, Ryan was able to better define his target customers and think more intentionally about how to reach and serve them.

Rhino I.T. focuses on helping small and midsized businesses modernize their technology, with a goal of specializing in trades like auto repair, HVAC, plumbing and construction.

“We help businesses modernize their phone systems, networks and Microsoft 365 without the enterprise price tag,” Ryan explained. “We replace outdated phone systems with cloud VoIP, strong networks, secure Microsoft 365 and ongoing protection so owners can focus on running their business instead of fighting tech problems.”

Redefining Success

“Success is an interesting moving target,” he said.

For Ryan, long-term success isn’t about rapid growth — it’s about building a business people trust.

“Honest, trustworthy, provides great services at reasonable prices,” he said. “My business couldn’t run without them.”

If things go according to plan, the business will grow alongside its customers.

“I’d be proud if I could get this business off the ground, grow while helping my customers grow, give back to the community — particularly the doggos — and provide myself and employees with enough funds to be comfortable.”

The First Step Matters

For Ryan, the timing made all the difference. What started as frustration became motivation — and ultimately, a business he is now actively building and growing on his own terms.

Since launching Rhino I.T. just six months ago, he’s still in the early chapters of that journey — but already has perspective that reflects the reality of getting started.

“Expect nothing and you will never be disappointed. Be prepared to put in the work.”
