Internal Affairs Investigations co-hosted through Vista Law Enforcement Training
Vista Law Enforcement Training and Consulting, LLC, in cooperation with the MSU Public Safety Training Center, has scheduled this 16-hour POST-approved training program, titled “Internal Affairs Investigations.” This training program is presented by current and retired law enforcement supervisors/ commanders tasked with conducting, supervising, and managing internal affairs investigations.
Topics include:
•Employee Rights in Internal Affairs Investigations including Missouri Police Officers’ Bill of Rights
•Garrity v New Jersey (1967), Miranda v Arizona (1966), Brady v Maryland (1963), Giglio v US (1972), and Other Pertinent Case Law
•Notice of Complaint, Garrity Warnings, and Miranda Warnings
•Investigative Methods, Documentation, and Storage of Documents
•Truth Verification Tests
•Investigative Findings, Notice of Findings, and Disciplinary Actions
•Integrity Checks and Early Warning/Intervention Systems/Officer Wellness Programs
•Demonstrating the proper tools, methods, and documentation to conduct thorough internal affairs investigations through practical application
•Demonstrating the proper interviewing skills through practical, role-playing scenarios
•Demonstrating the proper investigative process/findings through practical, role-playing scenarios
This program will familiarize law enforcement investigators, supervisors, and command personnel who are ultimately responsible for conducting, managing, and deciding on internal affairs investigations with current case law, employee rights, types of internal affairs complaints, the proper complaint process and investigation, and types of findings, among other relevant topics. This course is also recommended for anyone who is a commissioned peace officer in the State of Missouri, so they can become familiarized with the Missouri Police Officers’ Bill of Rights that was enacted in August 2021.
