Vroom Solar selected for AFWERX award to aid in powering military bases

Bringing solar to everyone

There’s a moment every founder cherishes: finally saying, “I made it.” Luke Phelps, founder and CEO of Vroom Solar, wasn’t just dreaming – he was building it.

Electricity transformed history. But for too many, it remains a distant resource. Phelps, driven by the desire to make electricity more accessible, created Vroom Solar

And now, the Air Force Work Project (AFWERX), the innovation arm of the Department of the Air Force, has recognized the company’s efforts. They recently selected Vroom Solar for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract.

Think of these awards as a rocket launch for groundbreaking ideas. The program focuses on research and development for small businesses that have potential in creating transformative projects for the military.

Phelps previously discussed the company’s revolutionary solar kits that make charging equipment more sustainable.

“Our system bypasses the batteries completely,” Phelps explained. “All you have to do is plug the panels together…it’s that simple.”

The innovative technology provides power to not only the agricultural industry, but also to campsites, cabins, kitchen appliances and hopefully soon, military bases. It’s a portable power source that simplifies solar accessibility.

“Power production is crucial… especially in times of crisis or natural disaster.”

Vroom goes airborne

Vroom Solar has been dedicated to creating affordable, scalable and efficient solar power since the beginning.

With the SBIR contract, Vroom Solar’s revolutionary Smart Solar Management (SSM) system will be playing a vital role in tackling some of the Air Force’s most pressing energy challenges. This collaboration is all about building awesome tech that helps keep our country safe.

The AFWERX SBIR contract will allow Vroom Solar to continue the development and engineering on their patent-pending SSM system to not just power homes and sheds, but military bases everywhere.  It will deliver reliable, clean power without the limitations of traditional systems. No batteries, no complicated grid connections – just pure, efficient solar power on demand.

SBDC strengthens connections

Missouri SBDC at MSU has continued to be an invaluable resource for Vroom Solar as it grows.

Sandra Smart, a technology and commercialization specialist with Missouri SBDC, recognized the transformative potential of Vroom’s technology, and is excited for them to have been selected for an AFWERX SBIR. It’s a program she is passionate about engaging clients with.

“Witnessing Vroom Solar’s growth in such a short time has been incredibly rewarding,” Sandra says. “Their dedication to making solar energy accessible is truly inspiring, and I have no doubt their technology will have a significant impact. The AFWERX award is a major milestone, and I can’t wait to see where they go from here.”

Sometimes SBDC’s support can be as simple as a connection that has full faith in your idea.

“People are excited to jump on board only once you’ve sold a few. Sometimes you need a partnership that’s willing to take a bit of a risk with you,” Katherine Benson, community relations coordinator of Vroom Solar, explains.

Looking ahead

Vroom Solar’s innovative spirit continues to push boundaries, demonstrating that the intersection of technology and national security holds limitless potential.

The future of accessible, reliable solar power is undeniably bright.
