Helping more than 330 entrepreneurs move from idea to action across southern Missouri.
Most new businesses don’t start with a perfect plan — they start with an idea and a lot of questions. Starting a business is hard. But when you bring entrepreneurs together to learn, share, and work through those questions, something starts to take shape. That’s the kind of magic we’ve seen in the Early-Stage Business Boot Camps we’ve held over the last 2½ years.
Over that time, these sessions have helped entrepreneurs across southern Missouri take the next step — moving from idea to action with practical tools and guidance.
The Impact
- More than 330 entrepreneurs completed the full series
- 34 cohorts hosted
- Delivered in more than 20 communities across the region
Participants didn’t just attend — they worked through their ideas, asked questions, built plans, and began putting those plans into motion.
From Ideas to Action
Each Early-Stage Business Boot Camp, led by efactory and the Missouri SBDC at Missouri State University through Innovate Southern Missouri, focused on helping entrepreneurs understand what it really takes to start and run a business.
Participants worked through the fundamentals — from evaluating their idea and understanding their customer, to thinking through operations, financial management, funding, and risk.
Just as important, they learned directly from people doing this work every day — bankers, attorneys, CPAs, HR professionals, insurance providers and other business leaders who shared practical insight and real-world experience.
These conversations helped participants ask better questions, think more critically about their business, and understand the decisions in front of them.
For many, the shift was simple but meaningful — moving from “I have an idea” to “I know what to do next.”
Real Businesses, Real Progress
Recently, we reconnected with Caroline and Liz Lusk, who participated in the Early-Stage Business Boot Camp and now own Set the Stage Southwest Missouri.
“We’ve maintained relationships with some of the speakers that came and shared during specific classes. Meeting them and then staying connected — it’s like we’re in this together,” Caroline Lusk said.
Ryan Coe, who participated in another cohort, recently launched Rhino I.T., now operating out of efactory.
“I’d be proud if I could get this business off the ground, grow while helping my customers grow, give back to the community, and provide myself and employees with enough funds to be comfortable.”
Powered by Investment
The Early-Stage Business Boot Camps were made possible through support from the Missouri Department of Economic Development ARPA funds, along with support from the U.S. Bank Foundation.
This investment in entrepreneurship has directly strengthened local economies, supported small business creation, and expanded access to high-quality business education in communities across southern Missouri.
In other words, the funding didn’t just support workshops — it supported entrepreneurs and their futures.
Delivered Through Partnerships
The reach and impact of the Early-Stage Business Boot Camps were made possible through strong partnerships across the region.
More than 20 guest speakers, along with over 30 training partners and connectors, played an important role in making these sessions possible—bringing real-world expertise, supporting delivery, and helping promote and host each cohort locally.
Together, they created an environment where entrepreneurs could ask questions, learn from experience, and take meaningful next steps. Because of this network of support, entrepreneurs didn’t just gain information — they gained access, perspective and a clearer path forward.
The Ripple Effect — What’s Next
When one entrepreneur launches, it creates jobs, fills empty storefronts, keeps dollars local and inspires the next person to raise their hand and say, “Maybe I could do that, too.”
While ARPA funding for this effort is coming to a close, the work does not stop here. The relationships, partnerships and progress built through these Early Stage Business Boot Camps will continue through the Show-Me Network — expanding access to support and helping more entrepreneurs take their next step.
Thirty-four cohorts later, we want to say — to every participant who showed up, guest speaker who poured into them, community that hosted a cohort and every partner who believed this mattered — an enormous thank you.
