Interview and Interrogation | Homicide Case Study and Cold Case Review – 6 TS, 2 LS

This course will cover the following learning objectives:

  1.  The student should do the following prior to an interview to prepare.
    -Review available information
    -Police reports
    -Written statements
    -Photographs of the crime scene
    -Develop your skill to conceptualize the crime scene if you aren’t going to work the scene.
  2.  The student should ensure the following goals are met at before the start and ending of an interrogation:
    -To obtain a truthful statement from the suspect
    -Ensure that the procedures used in obtaining the statement allow it to be admissible in criminal court.
    -Detailed statement that allows for corroboration.
  3. The student will be able to identify the key elements of successfully applying for a search warrant for a GEO fencing search warrant, and discuss the usefulness of the a GEO fencing search warrant.
  4. The student will identify case law that applies to cell phones.
  5. The student will be able to define the key elements of the interview and interrogation process in “locking in” key witnesses and suspects into a story in the early stages of an investigation.
  6. The students will be able to identify the key elements of a structured method of organizing and working on a long-term major case.
  7. The students will be able to identify a starting point of a cold case investigation.
  8. The students will be able to identify three questions asked after the case review.
  9. The students will be able to identify three investigative hurdles during cold case homicide investigations.
